A woman who caused fatal injuries to her ex-boyfriend with a broken beer bottle will not face any charges under Colorado's Make My Day law.

On Oct. 2, Azura Lakin, 21, slashed her ex-boyfriend's throat with a broken bottle after a fight during which he choked her and tried to re-enter her house. According to police reports the ex-boyfriend, Shaun Cassidy, 23, was with Lakin and friends at a downtown Fort Collins bar called the Drunken Monkey. Witnesses there told police that Cassidy "began to act hostile," was intoxicated and smashed Lakin's phone before returning to her Fort Collins apartment to take back his things. Read more;

 An FBI cadaver dog reacted to the scent of a dead person inside the Kansas City home where a baby girl disappeared nearly three weeks ago, according to a police affidavit released Friday.

The affidavit was filed to support a search warrant request for the home of Deborah Bradley and Jeremy Irwin, who reported their 10-month-old daughter, Lisa Irwin, missing Oct. 4 and said someone must have crept into the home and taken the girl while the mother and two other boys slept.

The affidavit said the dog taken into the house Monday indicated a "positive `hit' for the scent of a deceased human in an area of the floor of Bradley's bedroom near the bed." A judge approved the warrant Tuesday and police and the FBI conducted a daylong search Wednesday. Read more;

Police had previously visited the home of a 14-year-old boy who allegedly was kept locked in a filthy room in a mice-infested trailer for most of three years, but authorities said Friday that they saw no prior signs of abuse.

The boy, described by his mother as "developmentally delayed," was found hiding under a neighbor's porch Sept. 27 in the northern Colorado town of Erie after his mother and her boyfriend left on a trip to New York.

According to an arrest affidavit, the boy told police that his mother, Amanda Joliff, her boyfriend, Richard Smith, and the boy's sister had kept him locked in the room under Joliff's orders since early 2008. He said he was allowed out to take care of the family's ducks, to clean and to eat, but said he usually only ate about four times a week. Read more;

Deborah Bradley, the mother of missing Kansas City infant Lisa Irwin, has come under a cloud of suspicion, as police accuse her of being uncooperative and her recollection of events leading up to the disappearance seems to change.

None of that appears to surprise Shirley Pfaff, who describes herself as Bradley's former best friend.

"She was my friend at one time and I loved to be around her, but when I [saw] the other side of her and got to know the true Debbie, I couldn't even believe I trusted her with anything," Pfaff told The Huffington Post. Read more;

 The mother of a missing Kansas City baby said Monday that she was drunk when her daughter disappeared, may have blacked out and actually last saw the child hours before the time she originally told police she checked on her.

The revelations came hours before a New York attorney best known for defending Joran Van der Sloot, the Dutch man suspected in the 2005 disappearance of Natalee Holloway in Aruba, said he had been hired to represent parents Deborah Bradley and Jeremy Irwin.

The couple reported their 10-month-old daughter missing Oct. 4 after Irwin returned from working a night shift and found the front door unlocked, the house lights blazing, a window tampered with and the baby gone. Bradley and their two sons were asleep elsewhere in the home.

In June, the Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney found himself under attack for a joke he tried to make at a meeting with a group of unemployed people in Tampa, Fla. “I am also unemployed,” Romney announced, insinuating that the job he lacked was the presidency.

William Hurlbut, 29, a former police officer was sentenced Friday in federal court to 20 years in prison for producing child pornography after he admitted using his iPhone to film sex acts with an 8-year-old boy when the child was sleeping or unconscious.

Hurlbut is a former police officer for Aquia Harbour and had used the department’s Internet connection to share child pornography, according to court records. The state-certified department serves a gated community in Stafford County.

 The file sharing attracted the attention of investigators in June 2010, court documents show, and a later search of Hurlbut’s home uncovered more than 1,000 images and more than 1,000 videos of child pornography including those with the 8-year-old boy, according to court papers.

Hurlbut was later fired from the police department for an unrelated issue, court filings state. Read more;

The parents of a missing 10-month-old Missouri girl are no longer cooperating with investigators, police said late Thursday – an assertion the family quickly and firmly denied.

At an evening news conference, Kansas City police spokesman Steve Young said Jeremy Irwin and Deborah Bradley stopped cooperating with authorities Thursday. The couple had been working with police since the disappearance of their daughter, Lisa, who the parents say was snatched from her crib sometime late Monday or early Tuesday.

"Tonight, they decided to stop talking to detectives, and I don't have to illustrate how that affects the investigation. That speaks for itself," Young said.

A 3-year-old child witnessed the killing of three people in a remote area of Montana's Crow Indian Reservation and named a family member as the shooter, according to an FBI affidavit.

Sheldon Bernard Chase, 22, was captured in Washington state Wednesday after a multi-state manhunt and made an initial appearance before a judge Thursday. He's accused of killing his grandmother, cousin and cousin's boyfriend at their rural home on Tuesday.

The violence inside a prominent Crow family known for its adherence to traditional tribal values has roiled the reservation south of Billings. An FBI affidavit filed in the criminal complaint against Chase offers new insight into what happened. Read more;

What's living with Martha Stewart like? Well, according to her daughter Alexis, it wasn't exactly all crafts and Christmas magic.

According to the Daily Mail, Alexis is opening up about her childhood in a new book, 'Whateverland: Learning to Live Here.'

"If I didn't do something perfectly, I had to do it again... I grew up with a glue gun pointed at my head," Alexis says in her new book out Oct. 18. Read more;

Diana Gonzalez, 19, said her estranged husband, Armando Perez, 37, kidnapped her from San Diego City College. For three days, he held her captive. She said he raped her. He threatened to kill her. And he choked her until she passed out.

Immediately, following the attack, Gonzalez reported the abduction to San Diego police. She told a detective Perez had battered her 20 other times. Based on her injuries and her story, the detective determined Gonzalez had been a victim of kidnapping, assault, rape, false imprisonment, spousal abuse and criminal threats. Perez was arrested and the police department submitted the case to the district attorney's office. 

The district attorney's office decided not to press charges and Perez was released. 

Authorities now believe Perez went back to San Diego City College for Gonzalez a second time. 

Her body was found in a campus restroom.

Perez has been charged with her murder and is believed to have fled to Mexico. 

The girl is dead, He remains a fugitive and the District Attorney, Bonnie Dumanis, is running for Mayor of San Diego. Read more;

A 6-year-old girl came home from school and discovered her parents and live-in baby sitter dead in what police said was a double murder-suicide in the Twin Cities suburb of Oakdale.

Teenage neighbor Brady Hartman told the Star Tribune that the child came home from school Thursday and found the three dead. He said the girl ran out of her house sobbing and screaming, "Mommy, daddy dead! Mommy, daddy dead!"

Hartman's mother consoled the girl and called 911.

"Yeah, I blame my daughter for Caylee not being here today," George Anthony told Dr. Phil McGraw. "I lost Caylee three years ago and I believe I lost Casey at the same time. I believe that. She is responsible."

"I believe something else happened to[Caylee]. ... I believe Casey or someone else she was with possibly gave too much to Caylee. She fell asleep and didn't wake up," he said.

When McGraw asked, "Too much what?" Anthony replied, "Possibly some kind of drug or something like that."

The body was discovered late Sunday afternoon behind the Supreme Council of the House of Jacob Church in rural Somerset County. Members of the congregation had been back in the woods and unexpectedly found the body, police said.

On September 7, the search for Alice Davis took an unexpected turn when authorities found her husband dead of an apparent suicide inside their home.

"He died from what appears to be self-inflicted razor wounds to his left arm -- he severed his artery,"Wicomico County Sheriff Mike Lewis told The Huffington Post last week.

Joselyn Cedillo, 2, was on life support with multiple internal injuries at a Dallas hospital Thursday, The Dallas Morning News reported. A hospital spokeswoman told The Associated Press she had no information on the girl Friday.

The newspaper, citing police records, said glue and paint were stuck to Joselyn's palms, and that skin had torn away in places.

Joselyn's mother, Elizabeth Escalona, was crying and hysterical when she called her own mother Wednesday morning from her Dallas apartment, according to police records. The records show that when the grandmother arrived at the apartment, her granddaughter was unconscious on the floor. She took her to the hospital.

One of the girl's brothers said their mother kicked the child in the stomach and beat her with a belt and shoe, according to police records. Read more;

From Seattle to Miami, questions have arisen whether officers of the law are breaking rules in their pursuit of those they suspect—or claim—to be breaking the law.

 The DOJ is now looking into seven fatal police shootings of suspects in Miami between February and July 2010. All of the victims—six men and a 16-year-old boy—were black. All of the officers are Latino. “Some city leaders and community activists have raised questions about whether race was a motive in any of the shootings,” reports The New York Times.

In mid-February, the Miami NAACP and the ACLU asked a civilian panel wielding subpoena power to look into shootings. The ACLU said the number of shootings is disproportionate when compared to larger cities such as New York City, in which the population is 20 times larger than in Miami. New York City had just eight police-involved shootings in 2010,” reported The Miami Herald.

Alice Elizabeth Davis, a 55-year-old English teacher at Parkside High School in Salisbury, was last seen at about 6:30 p.m. on Labor Day. According to her husband, she left their Allen home to go shopping at a Walmart in nearby Fruitland, Md.

When Davis failed to return home by 8 p.m. her husband contacted police and reported her missing. During a search of the shopping center property, investigators spotted Davis' blue Honda hatchbackparked across the street in a Big Lots parking lot.

According to the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office, the lead agency investigating the case, officers found no signs of a struggle in or around the vehicle. Investigators also reviewed video surveillance cameras at Walmart and Big Lots and found no evidence that Davis was at either store Monday. Read more;

A 10-year-old Dallas-area boy who died of dehydration after his father and stepmother kept water from him was being punished for wetting the bed, authorities say.

The boy, Jonathan James died July 25 after water was kept from him for five days while temperatures soared to 100 degrees or more each day, police said. The boy's dad, Michael Ray James, and stepmother, Tina Alberson, both 42, were jailed after being charged Thursday with injury to a child causing serious bodily injury.

Jonathan's twin brother, Joseph James, and a 12-year-old stepbrother were not injured and are staying with relatives.

Attorneys for the dad and stepmother did not immediately return calls seeking comment left at their offices Saturday night.

"They still wouldn't let him have water," Joseph said.

Joseph told the newspaper he wanted to help his brother but was worried he would face similar punishment.

"I wanted to do something, but I couldn't," Joseph said. "I couldn't do nothing because I would get in trouble."

Jessica Beagley  of Anchorage Alaska, was convicted Tuesday of misdemeanor child abuse after squirting hot sauce into the mouth of her adopted Russian son as punishment in what prosecutors said was a ploy to get on the "Dr. Phil" TV show.

Prosecutors also said defendant Jessica Beagley, 36, of Anchorage made the 7-year-old boy stand in a cold shower when he misbehaved. Both actions were recorded on videotape.

Neither Beagley nor her husband Gary Beagley, an Anchorage police officer, showed any emotion when the seven-person jury announced its decision. The couple walked quickly from the courtroom and down a set of stairs without responding to questions from reporters. Read more;

Boonton, N.J. Kashif Parvaiz, a 26 yr. old Pakistani-American man ordered his wife gunned down while they and their son strolled a quiet suburban street. Kashif suffered non-life-threatening wounds in the shooting which occurred as they were walking with their 3-year-old son to a relatives' house. The boy was unharmed.

Parvaiz and 26-year-old Antoinette Stephen, of Billerica, Mass., both face charges of murder, conspiracy and weapons offenses. He also faces child-endangerment charges.

Parvaiz told police his family had been attacked by a group of men who called them terrorists, authorities said Friday. Read more;

SACRAMENTO -- A statewide Amber Alert has been issued for a 2-year-old girl federal officials believe may be in danger.

was taken by her father in Sacramento on Sunday, according to a press release from the FBI on Friday.

Mourad "Moni" Samaan has partial custody of his daughter, Madeline, but failed to return her to her mother's home over the weekend, according to FBI agent John Cauthen.

Authorities have not been able to locate Madeline or her father.

Investigators say that all electronic communications and money transactions on Samaan's accounts stopped on Sunday.

His family says he is an emotional roller coaster, and that there were custody issues over Madeline.

The girl's mother recently filed court papers seeking full custody.

Samaan drives a green Toyota 4Runner, with California plates, #3XRM111.

He is a US citizen who was born in Egypt, standing about five-foot-six, with black hair and brown eyes.

He also speaks Spanish very well.

In the Amber Alert issued Friday afternoon, officials say Samaan could be anywhere in the state of California.

Just hours after Ray Coriell's 8-year-old daughter was found kidnapped and raped in an east Bakersfield dirt field, detectives say Coriell failed a lie detector test.

Newly released detective reports indicate Coriell showed a high probability of deception to questions asked about him having sex with his daughter. But they didn't arrest him then. Indeed, the investigation really began to unfold as Coriell was holed up inside his home the next day threatening suicide.

As he held the sheriff's SWAT team at bay, detectives received cellphone GPS records pinpointing Coriell's location near that field the morning his daughter was abducted. As deputies waited for him to surrender, detectives got the arrest warrant that accused him of kidnapping, rape and attempted murder. Read more;

Five years ago this week, President George W. Bush signed the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act with the intention of making it the law of the land for keeping tabs on sex offenders.

This week also marks a key deadline for states, tribes and U.S. territories to meet the act's requirements or face a 10% cut in federal justice assistance funding. 

As of July 27, 2011, 14 states, nine tribes and the territory of Guam had "substantially implemented" what's known as the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act, or SORNA, provisions of the Adam Walsh Act. 

According to Susan Frederick, Federal Affairs Counsel for the National Conference of State Legislatures, 48 states have enacted nearly 350 laws related monitoring sex offenders.

Fredrick also said, ".... any time you're going to be collecting and cataloging information on more people more often, that comes at a high cost. The question is whether it's worth it."

Many states don't want to change their laws; others believe the legislation's cost outweighs its predicted benefits, she said. Texas has put the estimated federal funding cuts at $1.4 million, compared to a cost of $38.7 million.

Authorities say the body of an 11-year-old New Hampshire girl who disappeared nearly a week ago has been found in a river less than half a mile from her home.

Divers found Celina Cass's body Monday morning near a hydroelectric dam that spans the Connecticut River between her hometown of Stewartstown, N.H., and Canaan, Vt.

Prosecutor Jane Young confirmed the identity at a news conference Monday night.

The discovery followed nearly a week of intense searching that attracted more than 100 federal, state and local law enforcement officers to the town of 800 residents a mile from the Canadian border.

Cass was last seen alive in her home on July 25. Young says her death is considered suspicious. 

The family of a 10-year-old found dead in a trunk outside an Arizona home initially claimed the child died while playing hide-and-seek. But investigators now believe Ame Deal suffocated after her family locked her in the box because she took a popsicle from the freezer without permission.

Phoenix police claim Deal's grandmother, aunt and two cousins regularly subjected the child to horrific treatment, ultimately culminating in her July 12 death. [Read more]

A Florida teenager didn't believe his best friend when he said he was going to kill his parents. He had heard the threats before.

He wasn't convinced hours later when Tyler Hadley, 17, confessed to him in gruesome detail how he had attacked his parents with a hammer, ...... as dozens of teens were holding a rowdy party in the house.

None of it seemed real, the friend told police, until he was led to the master bedroom to see the unthinkable: The bloody, lifeless bodies of Blake and Mary-Jo Hadley, dead on the floor. Read more:

Tyler Hadley of Port St. Lucie, Fla. is charged with twin counts of first-degree murder in the deaths, which authorities say happened Saturday (7/16/11). He is being held without bond at a juvenile detention center.

The parents – Blake and Mary-Jo Hadley – were believed to have been struck with the hammer in their heads and torsos sometime after their son posted on Facebook around 1:15 p.m. Saturday alerting friends to an evening party at his house.

Investigators believe the parents were attacked outside their master bedroom and the bodies were moved into the bedroom and the door locked.

As many as 60 people attended the party that night, according to Port St. Lucie Police.

The Casey Anthony trial and the terrible story of the death and dismemberment of 8-year-old Leiby Kletsky in Brooklyn this week has captivated our nation like so many high profile cases in the past. 

While many might believe that cases like this will bring attention to the issue of protecting our children, at the end of the day these individual stories only highlight the tip of the iceberg.... 

The reality is that 150 children, most under the age of four, die every month from abuse or neglect. While high profile cases do bring awareness, they take our focus off the real issue of suffering children. 

According to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), more than 3.3 million reports of child abuse are made every year, the 2009 Child Maltreatment report from HHS estimates that 1,770 child abuse deaths occurred in 2009, and this number is on the rise. 

Child abuse is an epidemic and brutal deaths happen every day at every socioeconomic level, across ethnic and cultural lines, within all religions and at all levels of education.

Within minutes of the Casey Anthony verdict, much of America devolved into the mass media equivalent of a mob bearing torches and pitchforks. Twitter lit up with calls for vigilante justice, and proposals that we revoke the Fifth Amendment's protection against double jeopardy (or at least that we revoke it for Casey Anthony). Nancy Grace nearly spit fire, proclaiming, "The devil is dancing tonight." Conservative syndicated columnist Ben Shapiro wants to change the jury system entirely.

Laws named after crime victims and dead people are usually a bad idea. They play more to emotion than reason. But they're disturbingly predictable, especially when they come after the death of a child. So it's really no surprise that activist Michelle Crowder is now pushing "Caylee's Law," a proposed federal bill that would charge parents with a felony if they fail to report a missing child within 24 hours, or if they fail to report the death of a child within an hour.

While her attorneys are aware how hated she is, Casey Anthony may not fully understand that until she gets out. While she's been sitting in a jail cell, she has become a celebrity of sorts, getting letters of support and cash from all over the country. 

ABC News reports Anthony has nearly $500 in her jailhouse bank account. The money has come in from at least 17 donors since May, mostly from men. 

What a surprise.

Catherine Kieu Becker of Garden Grove reportedly prepared dinner for her husband and put a poisonous substance or drug in his food to make him drowsy, reports KTLA. While the man was sleeping, Becker allegedly tied him to the bed. When he awakened, Becker cut his penis off with a knife and threw it into the garbage disposal, turning it on as she did so.

Becker has been charged with "aggravated mayhem, false imprisonment, assault with a deadly weapon, administering a drug with intent to commit a felony, poisoning and spousal abuse," according to the Associated Press. The most serious of these charges is "aggravated mayhem," which carries a life sentence with possibility of parole
